A 5-Step User-Centric Design Thinking Process + Framework

design thinking framework

There are multiple design thinking frameworks, each with a different number of steps and phase names. One of the most popular frameworks is the Stanford d.School 5-stage process. Teams often use design thinking and agile methodologies in project management, product development, and software development.

Ideate

It involves identifying the problem statement to come up with the best outcome. This is done through observation and taking the time to determine the problem and the roadblocks that prevented a solution in the past. The Double Diamond diagram from the Design Council helps to visualize the divergent and convergent stages of the design thinking process, and highlights the different modes of thinking that designers use. Steve Eppinger is a professor of management science and innovation at MIT Sloan.

Don’t make people think or read too much — they’ve got things to do

In another example from the education field, Peruvian entrepreneur Carlos Rodriguez-Pastor hired design consulting firm IDEO to redesign every aspect of the learning experience in a network of schools in Peru. It was only part of the solution, but if the idea had been rejected outright, or perhaps not even suggested, the company would have missed an important aspect of the solution. Infeasible ideas can generate useful solutions, but you’d never get there if you shoot down every impractical idea from the start. It is also important to interview and understand other stakeholders, like people selling the product, or those who are supporting the users throughout the product life cycle. With design thinking, throwing out what you think you know and starting from scratch opens up all kinds of possibilities. At this phase, bring your team members together and sketch out many different ideas.

Stage 4 in the Design Thinking Process: Prototype

The sketches can visualize the business logic of your application or individual design decisions (such as the design of the app's screens). Conduct in-depth user research to understand your target audience’s thoughts, feelings, beliefs, and actions. These are reflected in the design thinking methodology, which we’ll explore in detail a little later on. We’ve outlined five of design thinking’s most important principles below. If you’re a designer, an entrepreneur, or any kind of employee, you are no stranger to the constant pressure to innovate. Our capacity for innovation—the ability to conceive ideas which are at once actionable and effective—is what gives us the upper hand in competitive industries.

Step 5. Test

The applications vary slightly from program to program, but all ask for some personal background information. If you are new to HBS Online, you will be required to set up an account before starting an application for the program of your choice. Once findings from your observations are collected, the next step is to shape insights by framing those observations. This is where you can venture into the abstract by reframing the problem in the form of a statement or question.

Fill in an empathy map

Once the problem statement or question has been solidified—not finalized—the next step is ideation. You can use a tool such as systematic inventive thinking (SIT) in this stage, which is useful for creating an innovative process that can be replicated in the future. In the online course Design Thinking and Innovation, Harvard Business School Dean Srikant Datar leverages a four-phase innovation framework.

User Journey Map

And throughout the process it is critical to engage in modeling, analysis, prototyping, and testing, and to really learn from these many iterations. In the define phase, use the data gathered in the empathize phase to glean insights. Organize all your observations and draw parallels across your users’ current experiences. That means that design thinking is not only for designers but also for creative employees, freelancers, and business leaders. This human-centered design process consists of five core stages Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype and Test.

That, in turn, helped them create better meals (which were also drastically changed), yielding happier, better nourished customers. This course contains a series of practical exercises that build on one another to create a complete design thinking project. What’s equally important is you can use your work as a case study for your portfolio to showcase your abilities to future employers! A portfolio is essential if you want to step into or move ahead in a career in the world of human-centered design.

Core Design Thinking Tools

The goal here is not to think about solutions, but to define the most common issues you’d like to fix. Let’s look at how a design thinking process can be used to design an app that will help users learn a new language. The Design Thinking process puts the needs and requirements of the user first. The first stage of the process is dedicated to building empathy with your target users and understanding their needs, expectations, and behaviors. As a designer, you might invite your colleagues from other departments to harness a diversity of ideas.

Permits storing data to personalize content and ads across Google services based on user behavior, enhancing overall user experience. In this video, Laura Klein, author of Build Better Products, describes a typical challenge designers face on agile teams. She encourages designers to get comfortable with the idea of a design not being perfect.

Given the iterative nature of design, the Design Thinking process can be considered more of a playbook than a predefined agenda. Often, Test results can reframe the opportunity, resulting in fresh rounds of Ideation and Definition. Design thinking is a continuous process of innovation used to identify problems and iterate solutions by focusing on users. You can follow a design thinking framework to improve the design of anything—from SaaS products to social policies. At IDEO, we are a community of designers who naturally share a mindset due to our profession.

The team focuses on strategic thinking, problem-solving and the cognitive aspects of design. It involves research and analytical thinking to ensure that design decisions are purposeful. The Head, Heart, and Hand approach by AIGA (American Institute of Graphic Arts) is a holistic perspective on design.

In the redesigned version, the “Log in” button has been replaced by a link that reads, “establish a collection of endorsements,” which is much, much clearer. There’s still a way to register to collect endorsements from this page, but it’s now a link at the very bottom of the page, which makes a lot more sense than having it at the top. There are a large number of people vying for the presidency this year, but the vast majority of people visiting this page are there to endorse a candidate. People were sent to this page to make an endorsement, they arrived with that mindset, they met a wall of text, and they clicked “Log in,” which was plausibly the first step in the process. The top part of the page detailed criteria for registering to collect endorsements and prominently featured a “Log in” button.

Use one of our free survey templates to start leveraging user feedback to design with empathy. IDEO did not invent design thinking, but we have become known for practicing it and applying it to solving problems small and large. When we looked back over our shoulder, we discovered that there was a revolutionary movement behind us.

User stories are often created during brainstorming activities and discussed as a team using tools like a cluster matrix. User stories are common in Agile methodologies, and can be grouped together to form epics and themes. Create a rich, realistic profile of your users that brings their experience to life for the entire team. Develop a holistic understanding of your current or potential users and capture it in a simple cognitive canvas. While not mandatory, evaluating solutions using tools like crowdsourced QA or live A/B testing can dramatically de-risk production. Design Thinking steps begin with Research, end with Implement, and traverse an iterative 5-step core of Empathy, Define, Ideate, Prototype and Test.

In simple terms, Design Thinking is a methodology that aims to tackle highly complex problems. Our easy online application is free, and no special documentation is required. All applicants must be at least 18 years of age, proficient in English, and committed to learning and engaging with fellow participants throughout the program.
